August 29th 2013. Pick Of The Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Just when the waning days of August provide weather ideal for outdoor screenings replete with the smell of newly mown grass and the din of hipster twattery, there are none. Way to go, Summer '13. Nah, don't bother showing up now. In the words of a bitter, guilting parent whose birthday visit you forgot about, maybe you'll make it to NYC next year. There are, however, plenty of reasons other than air-conditioning to visit the rep house nearest you today. Ongoing and concluding series on the calendar today include MoMA's Auteurist History of Film, Anthology Film Archives exhausted That's Sexploitation!, and Film Forum's STILL going Son of Summer Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror. The complete rundown as follows;
Film Forum
THE FLY (1958) Dir; Kurt Neumann
ALIEN (1979) Dir; Ridley Scott
THE FLY (1986) Dir; David Cronenberg
ALIENS (1986) Dir; James Cameron
MOTHRA (1961) Dir; Ishiro Honda
MoMA
SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING (1960) Dir; Karel Reisz
Anthology Film Archives
HOT BLOODED WOMAN (1965) Dir; Dale Bery
THE PICK-UP (1968) Dir; R. Lee Frost
Today's Pick? Kurt Neumann's original verison of THE FLY at the Film Forum. Because it's the greatest Douglas Sirk horror film Douglas Sirk never made. Also I feel it gets largely overshadowed by David Cronenberg's equally brilliant 80's update, and that just ain't right. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of the FF's 2-fer screening today and catch 'em both. You'll never hear the words "help me" the same way ever again. Trust me. Brrrr.
For the full details concerning these and all of August '13's classic screenings feel free to click on the interactive calendar on the upper right hand side of the page. And be sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter. Back tomorrow with a new Pick. Til then Zzzzzzzzzzz.
