August 31st 2013. Pick Of The Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

As summer '13 approaches I know I'm not alone in my enthusiastic expectations over RDJ's 4th outing as IRON MAN, J. J. Abrams' follow up to his excellent '09 STAR TREK reboot, and Guillermo Del Toro's HOLY GOOD GODDAM BEJEEZUS HOW IS IT ALREADY AUGUST 31ST?????

This must be how Han felt when the carbonite thawed. Speaking of being stuck in the past, today's classic screening series consist of the J. Hoberman-curated Fun City: New York in the Movies 1967-75 over at Astoria's Museum of the Moving Image and Film Forum's slowly self-terminating Son of Summer Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror! The complete rundown as follows;

Film Forum

ALIEN (1979) Dir; Ridley Scott

ALIENS (1986) Dir; James Cameron

THE HOWLING (1981) Dir; Joe Dante

Museum of the Moving Image

TAKING OFF (1971) Dir; Milos Forman

BORN TO WIN (1971) Dir; Ivan Passer

IFC Center

THE WILD BUNCH (1969) Dir; Sam Peckinpah

Landmark Sunshine Cinema

TAXI DRIVER (1976) Dir; Martin Scorsese

Nitehawk Cinema

FRANKENHOOKER (1990) Dir; Frank Henenlotter

Today's Pick? Frank Henenlotter's FRANKENHOOKER at the Nitehawk Cinema. Why? Three reasons; 1.) it's directed by the grindhouse auteur behind the joyful geek noise known as BASKET CASE, 2.) I've still never actually seen it, and 3.) IT'S CALLED FRANKENHOOKER, for f*@k's sake. Bonus points? The Nitehawk's superb root beer and tater tots. Unbeatable. Summer may be practically and unceremoniously dead, but at least I have Henenelotter's gloriously UNdead streetwalker to keep me company. Let's talk pricing.

For more info on these and all this month's classic screenings feel free to click on the interactive calendar on the upper right hand side of the page. And be sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter for updates and other esoterica! Back tomorrow with September 2013's inaugural listings, plus a brand new Pick. Til then be safe and sound and make sure the next knucklehead is too! Vive film, bastidz!
