September 18th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Classic screening choices this day include Roman Polanski's seminal noir homage, the middle film in Roberto Rossellini's War Trilogy, and the meet-cute of two of Universal Pictures' greatest horror icons. Ongoing series include MoMA's Auteurist History of Film, Anthology Film Archives' John Zorn Selects, and BAM's tribute to screenwriter Alfred Hayes. The entire shebang as follows;

Film Forum

CONTEMPT (1963) Dir; Jean-Luc Godard

MoMA

A TASTE OF HONEY (1961) Dir; Tony Richardson

Anthology Film Archives

CHINATOWN (1974) Dir; Roman Polanski

FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN (1943) Dir; Roy Wiliam Neill

BAM Cinematek

PAISAN (1946) Dir; Roberto Rossellini

Today's Pick? How could I possibly say no to Frankie and Wolfie, and I'm not referring to Sinatra and Mozart. Roy William Neill's FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN unspools tonight at Anthology Film Archives, the closest thing to Castle Frankenstein on the rep screening circuit. This fourth sequel to James Whale's original Shelly adap and second outing for Lon Chaney Jr. as the howling hirsute is notable for being the first crossover film for the many monsters in the Universal stable, and would be followed by such classics as HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, HOUSE OF DRACULA and ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. That's right, I said classics. Bring it.

Back tomorrow with more celluloid shenanigans, til then safe travels and keep an eye out for the next guy/gal too.

P.S. As the weather starts to cool it couldn't hurt to check in with the folks at Occupy Sandy to see if you can still donate/volunteer to those still waiting to reclaim their normal lives.
