September 21th 2013. Pick Of The Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Choices for the classic film fan this day include George Romero's quirky take on RenFair culture, David Cronenberg's lone adap of Stephen King, and the only masterpiece of the 30's gangster cycle not to be made at Warner Brothers. Today's Pick? I'm going with the Howard Hawks double bill of THE CRIMINAL CODE and SCARFACE at the Museum of the Moving Image in sunny Astoria. Both are prime examples of the now rote but still very true assessment that Hawks made a masterpiece in nearly every genre, both kicked off a prominent film career (Boris Karloff in CODE, Paul Muni in SCARFACE), and both are as witty and engaging as when first released. Perhaps more so. The price of admission gains you not only a seat at both screenings but entrance to the recently renovated museum itself, which is something no Cinegeek should have come this far in life without experiencing. Or in Howard's own words, don't be a well-meaning amateur, be a professional film fanatic.
