September 24th 2013. Pick Of The Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Excruciatingly few choices for the film fanatic this brisk (TOO brisk if ya ask me) third day of Autumn, yet what's on display is masterpiece material indeed. No ongoing series, but the auteur title fight today features a malevolent Brit mastermind in one corner facing off against an equally potent cinematic cerebellum from The Bronx. Here's the short but sweet;
Film Forum
THE KILLING (1956) Dir; Stanley Kubrick
NORTHERN LIGHTS (1978) Dirs; John Hanson & Rob Nilsson
BAM Cinematek
REAR WINDOW (1954) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
Nitehawk Cinema
PATHS OF GLORY (1957) Dir; Stanley Kubrick
Today's Pick? I'm going for a slightly unconventional double bill, one that requires you board a subway train and cross a river (a strait, actually. Nobody ever gets that right). Two of the great Stanley Kubrick's earliest defining works are on display in our city this day, and if you have an ounce of hustle in your stride you'll easily be able to attend both. THE KILLING screens at Film Forum on West Houston, and a trifling trot to the Houston St. 1 train will connect you with the 14th street L, which will safely deposit you on Bedford St. in follically festooned Williamsburg, where a ten minute tops walk will find your feet planted firmly in front of the Nitehawk Cinema's doors on Metropolitan Avenue. Which you should then immediately open and purchase your ticket to PATHS OF GLORY. It's the perfect plan; you gear up with the Forum's excellent popcorn and Kubrick's classic heist noir as appetizers, cleanse the palate with the crisp air and earthier tones on your way to a sister borough, then indulge in the full feast with the Nitehawk's awesome tater tots n' root beer and Stan the Man's stark yet poetic takedown of the human animal's bloodlust. It all screams FUN!!! Hopefully you agree with me and maybe I see you at the screenings. If not, more tater tots for me. Huzzah either way.

Back tomorrow with more of what ya love, til then be safe and sound and make sure the next knucklehead is too. Who wins the Hitchcock/Kubrick match?
