September 25th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Again the choices are few but wholly worthwhile today. Ongoing series include MoMA's Auteurist History of Film and Anthology Film Archives' John Zorn Selects. The full mishegoss as follows;

Film Forum

ANTOINE ET ANTOINETTE (1947) Dir; Jacques Becker

MoMA

THE JOB (1961) Dir; Ermanno Olmi

Anthology Film Archives

THE IPCRESS FILE (1965) Dir; Sidney J. Furie

MURDER BY CONTRACT (1958) Dir; Irving Lerner

Today's Pick? I'll keep it simple. THE IPCRESS FILE, Bond-producer Harry Saltzman's cash in on the 60's cinematic spy craze he helped create, screens as part of the musically themed John Zorn Selects series at Anthology Film Archives. Michael Caine essays the title role of Brit secret agent Harry Palmer, the (anti-) hero of Len Deighton's spy novels that rests somewhere between Fleming's fancy and Le Carre's bleak. Cool, cerebral, and featuring one of John Barry's most iconic scores (he equally of 007 fame) IPCRESS sated the swinging era's appetitie for more Connery between Bond films and holds up as a stylish and clever time capsule of its decade. Plus you get to hear Caine say 'Arry Pahlmah. What's not to love?
