September 29th 2013. Picks of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Damn it just be rainin' Howard Hawks in NYC today! His classics are screening in two-count-'em-two venues on opposing sides of the East River, proving that Astoria may one day be able to hang with the cool borough. Other doings this day include a Harold Lloyd chase film masterpiece, Michelanglo Antonioni's breakout hit of world cinema, and Akira Kurosawa's cinematic reclaiming of his nation's honor. Ongoing series include Moving Image's Complete Howard Hawks, Anthology Film Archives' Middle Ages on Film, and MoMA's tribute to legendary production designer Dante Ferretti. The shenanigans as follows;
IFC Center
RED RIVER (1948) Dir; Howard Hawks
Film Forum
SPEEDY (1926) Dir; Ted Wilde
ANTOINE ET ANTOINETTE (1947) Dir; Jacques Becker
LOST...NOW FOUND (2013) Various directors
Nitehawk Cinema
METROPOLIS (1927) Dir; Fritz Lang
BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985) Dir; Robert Zemeckis
Museum of the Moving Image
THE CROWD ROARS (1932) Dir; Howard Hawks
MONKEY BUSINESS (1952) Dir; Howard Hawks
L'AVVENTURA (1960) Dir; Michelangelo Antonioni
MoMA
TODO MODO (1976) Dir; Elio Petri
MEDEA (1969) Dir; Pier Paolo Pasolini
Anthology Film Archives
SEVEN SAMURAI (1954) Dir; Akira Kurosawa
MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1975) Dirs; Terry Giliam and Terry Jones
Today's Pick? Shock of all shocks I'm going with the Hawks trifecta of RED RIVER at IFC Center, followed by the double feature of THE CROWD ROARS and MONKEY BUSINESS at Museum of the Moving Image. I already borough-hopped for Stanley Kubrick this week to catch THE KILLING at Film Forum and PATHS OF GLORY at the Nitehawk, it's only right I make a slightly bolder attempt for a cat I hold in slighter greater regard. The IFC Center does a great job serving the film community of lower Manhattan and deserves all of our support, and Moving Image has a whole museum attached to the screening space. Honest! And it's awesome Cinegeek crack! Plus I'll have plenty of time to get home for the series finale of BREAKING BAD, and let's be honest; today that 9pm time slot is all that really matters. There is only Monday after this. Forever.
For more info regarding these and all September's remaining classic screenings click the interactive calendar on the upper right hand side of the page. And be sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter, and please spread the word if ya like what I'm doing! Back tomorrow with more of the goods, til then stay safe and sound and look out for the next knucklehead too. Which means don't ruin the ending of BREAKING BAD for anyone who can't watch til tomorrow. Ya hear me Facebook and Twitter?
