October 8th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Again a slight lull before the rep calendar goes completely nuts. Rewards to be had this day include avant-garde enfant terrible Leos Carax's sophomore effort, Italian screen heartthrob Marcello Mastroianni's baby bump, and what is still widely considered Dario Argento's scariest film, which remains no small boast. Continuing series include Film Forum's trib to French auteur Jacques Demy, BAM's Cassavetes Redux, and the Film Society's Revivals, the latter a part of the 51st annual NY Film Fest. The cinematic grocery list as follows;

Film Forum

UNE CHAMBRE EN VILLE (1982) Dir; Jacques Demy

A SLIGHTLY PREGNANT MAN (1973) Dir; Jacques Demy

PARKING (1985) Dir; Jacques Demy

BAM Cinematek

MINNIE AND MOSKOWITZ (1971) Dir; John Cassavetes

Film Society of Lincoln Center

MAUVAIS SANG (1986) Dir; Leos Carax

Anthology Film Archives

SUSPIRIA (1977) Dir; Dario Argento

Today's Pick? As surely as Jessica Harper's dance student found nothing but dread, deception and the basest fears of all mankind in that esteemed ballet academy in the isolated Friedberg woods, so will you find the very same whence entering the East Village grindhouse remnant known as Anthology Film Archives, and tonight both experiences merge as the venue presents Dario Argento's classic of coven horror SUSPIRIA. Argento cast the still-green but ever plucky Harper with veteran talent like THE THIRD MAN's Alida Valli, FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN's Udo Kier, and Fritz Lang's Joan Bennett, and made use of some of the last Technicolor film stock, to present his lush vision of hell. This is probably the only movie whose TV commercial so frightened the piss out of me I hid under the dining room table until my parents' exasperation became scarier than the advert. Was that really three long years ago?
