October 9th 2013. Pick Of The Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Choices begin to expand for NYC's classic film fanatics today, as Richard Fleischer's serial killer suspenser/capital punishment excoriation, Pasolini's take on the Scheherazade fable, and Godard's toothless blasphemy (yep, he proved it's possible) all present themselves for public consumption. Continuing series inlcude Film Forum's Jacques Demy retrospective, MoMA's To Save and Project, Auteurist History of Film and Dante Ferretti trib, and BAM's Cassavetes Redux. The whole megillah as follows;
Film Forum
UNE CHAMBRE EN VILLE (1982) Dir; Jacques Demy
MoMA
WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND (1961) Dir; Bryan Forbes
10 RILLINGTON PLACE (1971) Dir; Richard Fleischer
ARABIAN NIGHTS (1974) Dir; Pier Paolo Pasolini
Film Society of Lincoln Center
BOY MEETS GIRL (1984) Dir; Leos Carax
HAIL MARY (1985) Dir; Jean-Luc Godard
THE CHASE (1946) Dir; Arthur Ripley
ALPHAVILLE (1965) Dir; Jean-Luc Godard
BAM Cinematek
LOVE STREAMS (1984) Dir; John Cassavetes
Today's Pick? I gotta admit I'm not in love with any of today's choices but I've also not seen a good deal of them. The most prominent screening currently residing on my cinematc Bucket List, however, would be Pasolini's ARABIAN NIGHTS at MoMA. The final entry in the filmmaker's Trilogy of Life, preceded by THE DECAMERON and THE CANTERBURY TALES, is purportedly a furthering of the director's style, a sort of opulent neo-realism should that even be possible. As it was made during the very permissive 70's Scheherazade's tales are afforded the appropriate amount of nudity and sex to do the fictional tall tale-spinner proud, and I could tell you that factors nowhere in my decision to make this my choice today, but then I'd be a goddamned liar.
