October 10th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Chills aplenty come early this month of Halloween in the form of a severed hand terrorizing Peter Lorre's murderer, axe-wielding Jack Nicholson's terrorizing of his trapped family in the Overlook hotel, and Jean-Luc Godard's terrorizing of cinema itself. Tres mauvais. Continuing series include Film Forum's Jacques Demy retrospective, MoMA's Auteurist History of Film, To Save and Project, and Dante Ferretti trib, and the Film Society's Godard huggery. The shenanigans in full;

Film Forum

BAY OF ANGELS (1963) Dir; Jacques Demy

MoMA

WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND (1961) Dir; Bryan Forbes

AND THE SHIP SAILS ON (1984) Dir; Federico Fellini

STARK LOVE (1927) Dir; Karl Brown

BAM Cinematek

THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS (1946) Dir; Robert Florey

Film Society of Lincoln Center

WEEKEND (1967) Dir; Jean-Luc Godard

Bowtie Chelsea Cinemas

THE SHINING (1980) Dir; Stanley Kubrick

Today's Pick? Having recently watched the incredibly entertaining doc ROOM 237, filmmaker Rodney Ascher's indulging of several theories (conspiratorial and otherwise) surrounding Stanley Kubrick's 1980 Stephen King adap, I gotta go with a re-watching of THE SHINING at the BowTie Chelsea Cinemas, if only to compare my notes with those of the film's contributors, which ranged from metaphor for the Native American holocaust to an admittance of guilt over having faked the Apollo 11 moon landing. You can't make this stuff up. The Bowtie Chelsea almost never screens 35mm as part of their Classics series, but they put a good effort into providing opportunities for big screen gatherings, so occasionally I like to make 'em my Pick and hopefuly add to the attendance. Film lovers gotta stick together no?
