October 17th 2013. Pick Of The Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

What we got here today my fellow Cinegeek is the first film from French action director Luc Besson, the last great film from the revered Alfred Hitchcock, and the most celebrated film from Japanese auteur Yasujiro Ozu. Continuing series include Film Forum's Jacques Demy retropsective, MoMA's ongoing Auteurist History of Film, and the Film Society's Jean-Luc Godard mollycoddle. The rundown as follows;
Film Forum
TOKYO STORY (1952) Dir; Yasujiro Ozu
LOLA (1961) Dir; Jacques Demy
THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT (1967) Dir; Jacques Demy
MoMA
DIVORCE, ITALIAN STYLE (1961)
Film Society of Lincoln Center
UN FILM COMMES LES AUTRES (1968) Dir; Jean-Luc Godard
WIND FROM THE EAST (1970) Dir; Jean-Luc Godard
BowTie Clearview Chelsea
THE BIRDS (1963) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
Museum of Arts and Design
LE DERNIER COMBAT (1983) Dir; Luc Besson
Today's Pick? As I'm admittedly not as schooled as I'd like in either movie musicals or foreign film, I get a chance to kill two birds wth one stone today, with a film that features two delectable screen birds indeed. No it's not THE BIRDS, I'm not speaking literally, I'm being casually sexist. I'm talking about real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorleac, who shared the screen in Jacques Demy's THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT for the second and, sadly, last time. Older sis Francoise was on the brink of the same superstardom Catherine was enjoying when an auto accident took her from film lovers forever. As regrettable the question "what might have been" remains, we can at least be glad Today's Pick, the tale of twin dance instructors who refuse to let their small town drab quash their big stage dreams, exists as a testament to her skill and screen presence. And I'm unabashedly looking forward to the sibling sirens bringing the hubba. Oh like I'm worse than the French?

More unspooling tomfoolery tomorrow kiddies, in the meantime safe and sound and keep an eye out for the other guy/gal too!
