October 29th 2013. Pick Of The Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

A lean day at month's end before October '13 goes out with its usual All Hallows Eve shenanigans, which boast varieties both safely cinematic and potentially dangerous street-crazy. Ah, Halloween in NYC, how we love/hate you.
Continuing today series include BAM's Dern + Black, the Nitehawk Cinema's VICE presents The Film Foundation Screening, and the Film Society's when-will-it-end? Godard retrospective. The lineup as it stands;
Film Forum
NOSFERATU (1979) Dir; Werner Herzog
BAM Cinematek
FAMILY PLOT (1976) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
Film Society of Lincoln Center
FRANCE/TOUR/DETOUR/DEUX ENFANTS (1977) Dir; Jean-Luc Godard
Nitehawk Cinema
TWO FOR THE ROAD (1967) Dir; Stanley Donen
Today's Pick? Stanley Donen's one-of-a-kind celluloid romance TWO FOR THE ROAD, which remains both incredibly entertaining and significantly modern 46 years after its release. Featured tonight by the Nitehawk Cinema (they of the amazing root beer and tater tots!) as part of their monthly Film Foundation series, presented by VICE magazine, I was honored by the theater whence asked to contribute a few words to the souvenir program that accompanies these special screenings. So for a change I will redirect you to VICE's page for my two cents regarding this classic.
I'll briefly add this however; this is a remarkable, influential work of cinema, crafted during a decade of volatile artistic expression, wherein it seemed by comparison quite conservative. The passage of time has proven it anything but. The film's 2005 restoration has been widely available to fans and newbies alike on DVD for the last 8 years, and that's been swell, really. Fans got to really lose themselves in legendary DP Christopher Challis' lush camerawork for the first time in decades. Tonight, however, we get to watch the Film Foundation's recent 4K resto unspool on glorious 35mm. AND get drunk on root beer. Top that, Herzog!

And be sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter! Back tomorrow with a brand spankin' new Pick! Til then don't take any apples with razor blades in 'em and make sure your neighbor eschews the same. Boo.
