Today's Pick? I'd sure like to make it a multi-borough Aldrich double feature today, but I've already chosen his excellent EMPEROR OF THE NORTH yesterday, and anyway something really, really special is happening tonight. The United Palace of Cultural Arts, a.k.a. the old Loews 175th street movie palace, has just re-opened its doors as a classic film venue, one more to grace our Cinegeek metropolis. For their inaugural presentation they left it up to their crowdsourcing contributors for a vote, and the winner by a clear choice was STAR WARS, and the runner-up was THE WIZARD OF OZ. Which is kind of a shame because they were both unavailable to license, clearing the path for tonight's screening of Michael Curtiz's heavyweight champeen of all-time, 1942's CASABLANCA. The opportunity to watch this film in an honest-to-god movie palace, along with what promises to be a special intro to the film and the theater itself by NY Post chief film critic Lou Lumenick, is simply an unbeatable offer tonight. Here's looking forward to more great classic screenings at this remarkable space!
