March 6th 2014. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Not much could survive this Arctic blight that has beset our land lo these last three months, so let's be grateful that Film Forum's Complete Hitchcock and MoMA's Auteurist History of Film and Vienna Unveiled are the lone series still scurrying about foraging for food and shelter. The Londonesque quest for fire be thus;
Film Forum
BLACKMAIL (Sound Version) (1929) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
MURDER! (1930) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock
NOSTALGHIA (1983) Dir; Andrei Tarkovsky
MoMA
THE SERVANT (1963) Dir; Joseph Losey
EPISODE (1936) Dir; Walter Reisch
DER MANDARIN: A SPECIAL FILM CONCERT (1918) Dir; Fritz Frieisler
BAM Cinematek
MARKETA LAZAROVA (1967) Dir; Frantisek Vlacil
BowTie Chelsea Cinemas
GILDA (1946) Dir; Charles Vidor
Today's Pick? Tarkovsky's NOSTALGHIA and Vlacil's LAZAROVA contain way too much ice in their hearts to add to our already unseasonably chilled environs, and Rita Hayworth's GILDA trumps them both! So let's go with the Hitch two-fer of BLACKMAIL and MURDER, two of Big Al's fave hobbies, unspooling at Film Forum as part of their Complete Hitchcock series. Judged against those other choices, and the physical evidence that the sun has gone out for good, Hitch's fare seems the celluoid version of a Snuggie. Feel free to bring one.
