March 19th 2014. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Today's continuing series include An Auteurist History of Film at MoMA, The Complete Hitchcock at Film Forum, and Under the Influence: Scorsese/Walsh at BAM. The pinwheel spins thusly;

MoMA

THE HUSTLER (1961) Dir; Robert Rossen

Film Forum

YOUNG AND INNOCENT (1937) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

THE SECRET AGENT (1936) Dir; Alfred Hitchcock

BAM Cinematek

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977) Dir; Martin Scorsese

Nitehawk Cinema

THE GODFATHER (1972) Dir; Francis Ford Coppola

Today's Pick? All entries tempt for reasons unique; the Nitehawk's Corleone love extends to a menu specifically designed for a meal with said clan, Scorsese's ode to the Vincente Minnelli musicals of the 40's and 50's comes complete with a star turn from the elder director's daughter, and the Forum offers a two-fer as part of a series celebrating none other than Tha Mahstah himself. But I can't take sides against Eddie Felson. No matter how Bert or the Fat Man have sized him up. He's most positively no loser.

And so Robert Rossen's THE HUSTLER, starring Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason as poolstick rivals, along with George C. Scott and Piper Laurie as competitors for his affections, snags my Pick today. Screens as part of MoMA's absolutely exceptional Auteurist History of Film series. My book is open.

P. S. Should you be feeling charitable during this harsh weather period please remember to check in with the good folks over at Occupy Sandy. Some of our NY neighbors are still feeling the effects of last year's hurricane. Be a mensch.
