April 3rd 2014. Pick of the Day.

Continuing series today include Tout Truffaut at Film Forum, Permanent Vacation at the Film Society, and An Auteurist History of Film, Vienna Unveiled and The Aesthetics of Shadow at MoMA. The rep circuit wim wam as follows;

Film Forum

THE WOMAN NEXT DOOR (1981) Dir; Francois Truffaut

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (1977) Dir; Steven Spielberg

Film Society of Lincoln Center

STRANGER THAN PARADISE (1983) Dir; Jim Jarmusch

MYSTERY TRAIN (1989) Dir; Jim Jarmusch

MoMA

FAHRENHEIT 451 (1966) Dir; Francois Truffaut

DISHONORED (1931) Dir; Joseph von Sternberg

THE PHANTOM CHARIOT (1921) Dir; Victor Sjöström

LIEBELEI (1933) Dir; Max Ophuls

BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919) Dir; D. W. Griffith

BowTie Chelsea Cinemas

FLASHDANCE (1984) Dir; Adrian Lyne

Today's Pick? Victor Sjöström's THE PHANTOM CHARIOT, screening as part of The Aesthetics of Shadow at MoMA. Mostly because the film's a brilliant slice of silent era filmmaking, and an excellent example of how shadow transformed in the medium from nusiance fought to mystery explored; mostly because accompanist par exellence Ben Model will be providing the piano tomfoolery during its unspooling; but largely and finally because it reminds that Weather Most Bergman, who looked upon director Sjöström as a prime influence, is finally, thankfully, back in its temporary grave where it belongs. Spring, baseball and late sunsets are finally here. Huzzah. An' all dat.

P. S. Should you be feeling charitable during this harsh weather period please remember to check in with the good folks over at Occupy Sandy. Some of our NY neighbors are still feeling the effects of the 2012 hurricane. Be a mensch.
