April 5th 2014. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Today's continuing series include American Hustlers at IFC Center, Nitehawk Naughties at the Nitehawk Cinema, Tout Truffaut at Film Forum, Permanent Vacation: The Films of Jim Jarmusch at the Walter Reade Theater, and MoMA's Vienna Unveiled and The Aesthetics of Shadow. The repertory shenanigans look like this;
IFC Center
A FISH CALLED WANDA (1988) Dir; Charles Crichton
BODY DOUBLE (1984) Dir; Brian de Palma
Nitehawk Cinema
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (1988) Dir; Gary Goddard
SCARFACE (1983) Dir; Brian de Palma
EVIL COME, EVIL GO (1972) Dir; Walt Davis
MoMA
THE UPPER CRUST (1981) Dir; Peter Patzak
THE BLUE ANGEL (1930) Dir; Joseph von Sternberg
FLESH AND THE DEVIL (1926) Dir; Clarence Brown
SCORPIO (1973) Dir; Michael Winner
FAUST (1926) Dir; F.W. Murnau
Film Forum
STOLEN KISSES (1968) Dir; Francois Truffaut
Film Society of Lincoln Center
MYSTERY TRAIN (1989) Dir; Jim Jarmusch
Today's Pick? The third film in the Antoine Doinel quintology (I'm counting the 30-minute Antoine & Colette as a full fledged entry), Francois Truffaut's STOLEN KISSES, screening at Film Forum as part of the Tout Truffaut career retrospective. Mostly 'cause I feel like I haven't shown enough love to this comprehensive program dedicated to the father of the French Nouvelle Vague, but really 'cause I'm just feeling sort of spiky and absurd and, just generally, as Eddie Izzard would put it, fuckin' French.
For more info on these and all NYC's classic film screenings in March '14 click on the interactive calendar on the upper right hand side of the page. For the monthly overview listen in to the brand new podcast! And be sure to follow me on both Facebook, where I provide further info and esoterica on the rep film circuit and star birthdays, and Twitter, where I provide a daily feed for the day's screenings and other blathery. Back tomorrow with a brand new Pick, til then safe, sound, make sure the next knucklehead is too.
P. S. Should you be feeling charitable during this harsh weather period please remember to check in with the good folks over at Occupy Sandy. Some of our NY neighbors are still feeling the effects of the 2012 hurricane. Be a mensch.
