April 8th 2014. Pick of the Day.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Today's continuing series include Tout Truffaut at Film Forum, Blonde Venus: The Films of Dietrich and von Sternberg at BAM, and Vienna Unveiled and The Aesthetics of Shadow at MoMA. Let the reading of the names commence;

Film Forum

MISSISSIPPI MERMAID (1969) Dir; Francois Truffaut

THE GREEN ROOM (1978) Dir; Francois Truffaut

MoMA

THE UPPERCRUST (1981) Dir; Peter Patzak

MOROCCO (1930) Dir; Joseph von Sternberg

SCORPIO (1973) Dir; Michael Winner

VAMPYR (1932) Dir; Carl Theodore Dreyer

BAM Cinematek

THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN (1935) Dir; Joseph von Sternberg

Today's Pick? Let's hang a left at the corner of sensibility and good taste for a moment and choose 70's fauxteur Michael Winner, famous for Charles Bronson-branding in works like THE MECHANIC and DEATH WISH's 1 through 3, and his attempt at Frankenheimeresque (I don't care if that's not a word) espionage in 1973's SCORPIO, unspooling as part of MoMA's excellent Vienna Unveiled series. Burt Lancaster's weathered CIA agent tutors successor Alain Delon until the agency declares the former traitorous prey and makes unwilling hunter of the latter. It's of its time, and it's fun. I can't believe Bruce Willis hasn't remade this yet.

P. S. Should you be feeling charitable during this harsh weather period please remember to check in with the good folks over at Occupy Sandy. Some of our NY neighbors are still feeling the effects of the 2012 hurricane. Be a mensch.
