June 24th 2014. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

The usual month's-end lull on the rep calendar reduces our choices to four screenings spread over two series. Once more the paucity of choice is inversely related to the quality of product. Which incidentally has always been my go-to pickup line with the ladies. Hashtag playah.
Today's ongoing series include Alec Guinness 100 at Film Forum and The Italian Connection: Poliziotteschi and Other Italo-Crime Films of the 60's and 70's at Anthology Film Archives. The breakdown looks thus yo;
Film Forum
THE SWAN (1956) Dir; Charles Vidor
THE SCAPEGOAT (1959) Dir; Robert Hamer
Anthology Film Archives
KIDNAPPED (1974) Dir; Mario Bava
WE STILL KILL THE OLD WAY (1967) Dir; Elio Petri
Today's Pick? Well, I can't employ my usual diligence and avoid a double-dipper today, as I've so recently chosen both series and there ain't any other options to be had. So I'm gonna resort to a perhaps lame tie-breaking machination and simply go with the series I didn't select last, which means Mario Bava's KIDNAPPED and Elio Petri's WE STILL KILL THE OLD WAY, part of Anthology Film Archives' gonzo cop-flick series The Italian Connection: Poliziotteschi and Other Italo-Crime Films of the 60's and 70's, snags my Pick this day of seeming Mediterranean breeze. And the great thing is you don't have to stop home first to drop off your picnicking paraphenalia, just add it to the collection that will surely be gathering at NYC's remaining vestige of the grindhouse era. Active Hibachis are frowned on.

Back tomorrow with a brand new Pick, til then make-a sure you wear-a yoo boolett proofa vestas. Yeah I went ethnic. From ME you expect the PC?

P. S. Even though we're coming into the summer months and therefore not often as mindful of the displaced, some of our fellow NY'ers are yet to be made whole since Hurricane Sandy hit nearly two years ago. Check in with the good folks at Occupy Sandy to see if you can't still volunteer/donate to our neighbors in need. Be a mensch.
