Members of the faculty and faculty members, students of Huxley and Huxley students; well, as the great man once said, that pretty much covers all the bases. It is my proud privilege, my honor, and my great delight to announce the 1st public event to be hosted by this site. It's been 2 1/2 years, seemed time. While the focus of this here digital periodical is to inform and update the unwashed masses (or perhaps that's simply the populace currently residing at my apartment) as to the comings and goings of classic repertory film in these glorious five boroughs and just beyond, even the most stalwart, antiquated amongst our number, in the bitterest denial of anything birthed cinematic past the deaths of Ford and Hawks, still, I gamble, derives some thrill, whether uplifting or acidic, whilst indulging in the annual trotting out of La La Land glam and the getting-it-wrong in each category. Otherwise known as the Academy Awards. Or the Oscars, should you dig the whole brevity thing. Count me as part of the former. Or latter. Oh hell, there's really no diffference. It all comes down to the ballot pools! And this year, courtesy of host venue, the grand Lunasa Bar & Grill in Manhattan's East Village, we're also dangling a doozy of a Grand Prize!
So now to specifics: Each attendee on the eve who purchases a boozy beverage, or scrumptious comestible from our flawless food menu, will recieve a ballot, to be filled out by the recipient's best-guesses. One ballot to a customer. These ballots will be turned in to our appointed ballot checker, who will reside in plain view of the evening's beautiful, intelligent, most fabulous crowd the world has ever seen! Upon broadcast's end the votes will be tallied, and a Grand Prize Winner announced, said unique individual to be awarded the Prize most Grand; the complete 007 BluRay box set, all 23 films from DR. NO to SKYFALL. And c'mon, who doesn't like James Bond? Unless he's played by Roger Moore. I digress, it is bounty most desired.
In the case of a tie, I will provide trivia questions to break it, the correct response absconding with 6 versions of Fleming's suave spymaster. The loser of the tiebreak, should it come to it, will be declared 2nd prize winner. And so forth should there be a three-way tie. Beyond that, good luck: we only have three prizes to give away that night. Mebbe I'll buy you a beer.
But about those second and third prizes, the former is still being worked on, but will probably manifest as a gift card to Amazon or Barnes & Noble, to better allow the winner to make their own choices. The THIRD prize, however, will be an introductory Pilates course offered by best friend and instructor extraordinaire Tracey Ryan, three sessions in all, about which you may find more information here. Let's face it, the Grand and 2nd prizes will only ensure you sink deeper into three things; your couch, a bag of pretzels, and self-hatred. Especially if you're a Roger Moore 007 fan. Gun for 3rd Prize! I'm tellin' ya! Should you have any questions about how the prizes will be awarded that night, please e-mail me here at the site.
We're also offering a pair of specially-crafted event cocktails that eve, a golden-hued beaut monickerd The Oscar, and a scarlet hussy known as Read Carpet Ready. We can't fully reveal the ingredients of these drinks, as they're heavily guarded by the folks at Price-Waterhouse. Suffice to say they'll get ya past the imagined Paparazzi and plenty more.
To all those I've gotten to know through this site's efforts, I 'd love to see you there. To all those I've yet to meet, ditto! This will be an evening most momentous, and the field, aside from a few solid choices, is pretty much wide open. Same as it's been the last coupl'a years. So I hope to find you in attendance not merely to make the night a succesful one, and not merely to express my gratitude for your support in person, but to simply, wholeheartedly, passionately, discuss film. It's what it's all about.
The ceremony takes place this coming Sunday February 22nd! Lunasa is located at 126 1st ave betwixt 7th street and St. Mark's Place!
