January 26th 2013. Pick Of The Day. Yours.

New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Alright, January. I hate you and you hate me. So let's get this post over with so I can sleep 20 hours and seemingly watch you die faster. Agreed?

On such a dour day there is much joy to be had at the cinema in terms of classic screenings. The biggest smile today, or smiles I should say, is a double-booking of the perennially mirth-inducing THE MUPPET MOVIE, once at noon at the Nitehawk Cinema's brunch screening and then again at 3pm as part of Moving Image's Paul Williams trib. Logistically it's possible to make both screenings. Lemme know if ya dare...

The Film Society's Aussie New Wave fest continues into the second day of its week long run. Kicking off at noon with Michael Powell's late career comebacker THEY'RE A WEIRD MOB at noon, the day is then devoted to G'Day autuers Bruce Beresford and Philip Noyce. The former is repped by art house hit THE GETTING OF WISDOM, which just preceded his international breakthrough with BREAKER MORANT. The latter is on hand to introduce and discuss his debut feature, BACKROADS, as well as his sophmore effort NEWSFRONT, which some consider to be his finest two hours to this day. Hard to pass up a chat with Phil, but not my Pick.

The Nitehawk Cinema also proves the tested adage that a broken clock is correct twice a day. Wait, that didn't come out right. You'll get the point. The great Joseph Von Sternberg's DOCKS OF NEW YORK unspools at 11am and features a live score from something called Guizot. Dig. Midnight at the NH welcomes one of the greatest midnight movies ever made, maybe the greatest; Alex Cox's seminal punk/Dada/anarchy textbook REPO MAN. Always intense.

Film Forum's New Yawk New Wave fest finally reaches Warhol territory, and how could it not. Drella had various levels of involvement with the indie/experimental film community, but provided the bulk of his art world heft to the cinematic ouvre of one Paul Morrissey, whose early notorious works under the Warhol banner are on display at FF today. TRASH depicts the scuzzball drug scene of the 70's LES, and features a bold lead perf from an actor some thought would offer serious competition to De Niro in that decade. Alas Joe Dallesandro was an actual junkie, and never reached the potential some saw. Also screening at the FF is Morrissey's WOMEN IN REVOLT, starring the feminine darlings of Warhol's Factory, Candy Darling, Holly Woodlawn and Jackie Curtis. The plot follows our heroines wait are you actually intersted in the plot of this flick? Director Morrissey himself will be on hand today for the 5:30pm screening of TRASH to discuss his indelible efforts from a daring cinematic decade. Tough call but not my Pick.

Museum of the Moving Image trods boldy forth into territory easily mocked by the ignorant and profane, those who wouldn't appreciate a kneeslapper if you actually got up and slapped their knees. Wait, that might not make my point. Irregardless, the head-scratchingly underloved and underrated ISHTAR screens as part of their Paul Williams trib tonight. The man himself will be present to introduce and discuss. Frig these guys have a lotta free time. I demand a sing-a-long. Telling the truth can be dangerous buisness.

The Landmark Jersey Loews, that miracle of moviegoing experience, presents a slight but immensely entertaining flick from the Hitchcock canon this day. TO CATCH A THIEF follows the exploits of Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, cat burglars retired and otherwise, as they play out their jests against a Technicolor French Riviera. I hate them. But the PATH drops you in front of the theater and the popcorn's a buck. Ya can't go wrong. But not my Pick.

Finally the ever awful Brian De Palma got it right for one of a handful of occasions with seminal 70's horror CARRIE. Boy did he at least cast well. Can you imagine anyone else in the title role but Sissy Spacek? We'll find out when the Chloe Moritz version hits later this year, but as much as I dig that chick she's got her work cut out for her. Screens tonight at the IFC at midnight. Also not my Pick.

So then, you ask, what oh high and mighty Master Control Program IS your Pick Of The Day? And my reply is thus.
