Today's Pick? I wouldn't be against recommending a second oudoor screening in a row, especially as we've been newly blessed by such in the early autumn months, but g'dam! It be freezin' out there! Sorry Audrey II.

What's left is a bit of a quagmire; I'm due for a least a double-dip in the Has retrospective, and yet I feel this too obvious a title in the remainder of the sked. Scorsese's DRIVER is a constant presence on the rep scene, and therefore rarely a priority screening. And to paraphrase Don Vito Corleone, "Rambo...eh, Rambo..." What I'd really love to boost is Carpenter's superior blueprint for the 80's slasher genre, a similar dynamic to the copycats following the wake of Hitch's PSYCHO. However, with equal eureka and alas, the screenign is sold out. Luckily, though, we're afforded a second midnight screening from the Carpenter canon, his last truly terrific film, if not his last great statement on the world via the cinema. Add to the equation the fact that its lead, one of the men most responsible for the rise of the WWF in the 80's, and who by all accounts was a pretty swell guy, recently left this earth at the none-too-old age of 61. So what better way to take in a true Carpenter gem and celebrate its star, all while observing the looming Haloween? And, y'know, digging the massacre of the 1% okay I know I said I wouldn't talk politics go ahead you tell me the French Revolution wasn't a ratings killer I'll stop now!

The one, the only, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper stars in John Carpenter's THEY LIVE, screening tonight in a sparkling new DCP iteration at IFC Center. One word of advice; bring plenty of bubble gum.
