November 10th 2015. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

Apologies, Stockahz. I've been remiss these last few days in my daily Pick duties. Sometimes life gets in the way, but for the foreseeable lunar calendar I should prove unhindered in providing my usual whatfor and whatnot. These, I am routinely told, are what makes me so celebrated a figure in the who-gives-a-damn? world of the blogosphere. Don't try and fool me with yer phony sentiments, I know what you damn kids are sayin' behind my back. My hearing's not totally gone, y'know!
Ahem.
Continuing series this day include To Save and Project: The 13th MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation at MoMA (Duh!), and Action and Anarchy: The Films of Seijun Suzuki at the Walter Reade Theater. The prankish projectionery be thus;
Film Forum
SPARTACUS (1960) Dir; Stanley Kubrick
MoMA
To Save and Project: The 13th MoMA International Festival of Film Preservation
THE GUILTY (1947) Dir; John Reinhardt
WOMAN ON THE RUN (1950) Dir; Norman Foster
CRIME WAVE (1985) Dir; John Paizs
Film Society of Lincoln Center
Action and Anarchy: The Films of Seijun Suzuki
STORY OF A PROSTITUTE (1965) Dir; Seijun Suzuki
THE CALL OF BLOOD (1964) Dir; Seijun Suzuki
Today's Pick? Simple. I. Am. A big fan of Kubrick and Douglas' sword-and-sandal gladiator-turned-rebel-leader epic. Somehow that doesn't retain the gravitas of Kirk's simpler, more effective line delivery. That just serves as further proof that the 99 year-old Issur Danielovich is imposible to replicate.
Stanley Kubrick's SPARTACUS unspools its digital 1's and 0's in a new DCP iteration today at Film Forum. If you've never seen this slice of Technicolor Technirama on the big screen, no matter what you think of the Forum's screens, there is simply no possible excuse to miss this presentation. Whether you love oysters or snails or both. Some of you get it, the rest of you need to watch the movie.
For more info on these and all NYC's rep film screenings in November '15 click on the interactive calendar on the upper right hand side of the page. For reviews of contemporary cinema and my streaming habits (keep it clean!) check out my Letterboxd page. And be sure to follow me on both Facebook, where I provide further info and esoterica on the rep film circuit and star birthdays, and Twitter, where I provide a daily feed for the day's screenings and other blathery. Back soon with new Picks 'n perks, til then safe, sound, make sure the next knucklehead is too!
P. S. The warmer, fiercer cuddle of the sun's sunnier disposition has begun its annual wane, but believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
