Today's Pick? It's been quite a spell since I've shown some earshot-level cardio pitter-patter toward one of my fave venues in the city, the French Institute, or Alliance Française for you haughty types. So I'm going with their new and wholly enticing program dedicated to legendary cinematographer Pierre Lhomme, entitled Lhomme Behind the Camera, under the umbrella banner of their superb CinéSalon series. Scheduled screenings today include Melville's recently restored masterwork ARMY OF SHADOWS and Eustache's THE MOTHER AND THE WHORE, the latter screening in what promises to be a beautiful 35mm print. The venue is fantastic, one of the better screening spaces on NYC's rep film circuit, and they usually score incredible guest speakers to intro the films. Tonight's 7:30pm screening of Eustache's MOTHER will be presented by none other than New Yorker magazine's chief film critic Richard Brody. Tough double bill ta beat, and definitely worth your braving of the Arctic blast. #WhatWouldTruffautDo?
