January 28th 2016. Pick of the Day.
New York City's premiere resource for classic film screenings in the metropolitan area. Offering reviews, recommendations, venues and a host of links keeping classic film and the silver screens alive.

New and continuing series this day include the tribs to silent-era Pioneer Cowboy William S. Hart and influential choreographer Jack Cole at MoMA, and the kickoff to the 3rd portion of Anthology Film Archives' celebration of American International Pictures' grand legacy. The box office brouhaha be thus;
MoMA
Modern Matinees: A Pioneer Cowboy
SHARK MONROE (1918) Dir; William S. Hart
MEET ME AFTER THE SHOW (1951) Dir; Richard Sale
THREE FOR THE SHOW (1955) Dir; H. C. Potter
Anthology Film Archives
American International Pictures, Part Three
THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (1970) Dir; Roy Ward Baker
THE DUNWICH HORROR (1970) Dir; Daniel Haller
Today's Pick? While the surfeit of silver halide at MoMA tempts, I gotta shine the Kliegs at the NYC Cinegeek's fave haunted house. Anthology Film Archives is bowing the third, and by no means last, leg of their fantastic trib to the most influential independent studio/distribution house of the postwar era, the place where such luminous film masters as Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, and Joe Dante cut their teeth. Perhaps both figuratively and literally. We got a pair of supernatural thrillers tonight, entirely apropos of what many consider to be the Overlook Cinema of NYC's rep film scene. Don't be afraid of the guy who brings his own mattress. He's always been the guy who brings his own mattress there.
Roy Ward Baker's THE VAMPIRE LOVERS and Daniel Haller's THE DUNWICH HORROR unspool tonight in glorious 35mm as part of AFA's wonderful and deserving trib to the grand old grindhouse American International Pictures! Garlic and stakes optional.

P. S. Winter's icy grip seems to have finally taken hold of our fair city, and believe it or not some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
