Oh, my old, weathered, wizened, worrisome foe who goes by the none too popular monicker of January. How fleet your reign has proved this year. How unwelcome your constant 31 day sense of dread remains. How glad we will all collectively be whence your annual interment, however temporary, commences. It also means that your despicable cousin, otherwise referred to as the NFL, also soonly meets its deserving, if also temporary end. Spring and Summer '16 loom just around the bend, we have merely to survive you and your successor, the perhaps even more scabrous February, although it boasts the mitigating circumstance of having only 28 days. Except this year it gets the extra Leap Year 24 hours. So my guard rests not. But my ebullience regarding the rep circuit's kinetic activity waxes.

New and continuing series this day include Film Forum's trib to The Coen Brothers, MoMA's trib to both silent-era Western Pioneer William S. Hart and influential choreographer Jack Cole, mother/daughter trib Jane and Charlotte Forever at the Walter Reade Theater, the third leg of AFA's trib to American International Pictures, the Justice in Film series at the New York Historical Society, and the leg-room luxurious Cabaret Cinema at the Rubin Museum. The antiquated antics be thus;

Today's Pick? So much to choose from this day, so few slots. One, to be precise. The midnight Cronenberg & Carpenter tempt mightily. The celebration of William S. Hart, a man crucial to the evolution of the Hollywood western, also draws. Kubrick's STRANGELOVE is a regular occurence in our movie-mad burg, but always begs selection. I just chose the AIP series yesterday, so I gotta avoid the double-dip. Which leads me to a choice delightful. Something recent, just within my 25-year cutoff requisite. I haven't sen it in ages, and it screens in its native, glorious 35mm format. So let's all prep for a venture into the life of the mind, shall we?

 

Joel and Ethan Coen's Palm D'or-winning BARTON FINK unspools today as part of the Film Forum's trib to the career of The Coen Brothers. Come to think of it, I've got a lot of stories...
