Today's Pick? Coppola's ode to omerte screens fairly often in our movie-mad metropolis, as does the twin bill from Cocteau, particularly at AFA, which also houses his ghost. And he's not the only one. I have a week to choose Carol Reed's masterpiece regarding the postwar impotence of the once mighty Brit Emp. And I just made La Magnani, one of my all-timers, my choice days ago. So it seems only right to finally shine the Kleigs onto MoMA's fantastic series which both plucks from the crates and in certain cases fully restores some worthy gems otherwise unheralded, from one of the major studios during the era when its founder's son became Chief of Production. His tenure produced the Universal Horror cycle of the 30's, perhaps the successful run hey are still best known for, including Lugosi as DRACULA, Karloff as FRANKENSTEIN's monster, and Lon Chaney Jr. as THE WOLF MAN. Within that same timespan many gems came and went, soem intriguing experiments as well as some solid melodramas. Tonight a forgotten director, one who began by directing Hal Roach's LITTLE RASCALS and ultimately is best known for IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE, is granted his 15m, with a pair of films that come exceedingly well-regarded and which I've never actually witnessed meself. If all goes well I'll correct that oversight this very night.

Edward L. Cahn's LAUGHTER IN HELL and AFRAID TO TALK screen back-to-back this eve as part of MoMA's pristine trib Universal Pictures: Restorations & Rediscoveries, 1928-37! You'll have multiple chances to rewatch many entries in this series, but not these twin pups. It's tonight or never. And you know what you'll decry should you miss these special screnings this eve?

Ahem.

CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe only if you're Shatner.

P. S. Winter's icy grip seems, SEEMS mind ya, to have loosened on our fair metropolis, but milder weather aside some of our fellow NY'ers have still yet to be made whole in the wake of the 2012 storm. Should you be feeling charitable please visit the folks at OccupySandy.net, follow their hammer-in-hand efforts to restore people's lives, and donate/volunteer if you have the inclination and availability. Be a collective mensch, Stockahz!
