October 30th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

One more slow day before the celluloid spookery unspools properly tomorrow night. Til then here be the ghastly unnervings to be found in our movie-maniacal metropolis. The incantation reads thusly;

Film Forum

NOSFERATU (1979) Dir; Werner Herzog

MoMA

THIS SPORTING LIFE (1963) Dir; Lindsay Anderson

Regal Union Square Stadium 14

THE SHINING (1980) Dir; Stanley Kubrick

Anthology Film Archives

THE WEREWOLF VERSUS THE VAMPIRE WOMAN (1970) Dir; Leon Klimovsky

October 29th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

A lean day at month's end before October '13 goes out with its usual All Hallows Eve shenanigans, which boast varieties both safely cinematic and potentially dangerous street-crazy. Ah, Halloween in NYC, how we love/hate you.

October 28th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

In the run-up to our calendar's annual celebration of spookery in all its glorious forms we have a slight lull in the sked today, but there's still some wonderful stuff for your consideration.

October 26th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

The creepy and the kooky continue to unnerve this day, as Halloween preludes include William Freidkin's masterpiece of mindfuck THE EXORCIST, Roman Polanski's persona-unravelling REPULSION, and Tobe Hooper's nightmare-replicating THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.

October 25th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

Halloween cinema finally begins to roll out properly in our movie-mad burg, but programmers have also made time to host Viking movies of the 50's and 60's, a WWI POW drama that Orson Welles called the greatest film ever made, and Otto Preminger's definitve work of 40's noir.

Pick of the Month from Gayle Gaddis - Aliens!

Nitrate Stock is pleased to present this new feature, which asks friends, readers and fellow film aficionados to provide their choice for the month's most unmissable flick.

October 24th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

Okay, Winter. I don't like you and you don't like me, and it seems like you've won the battle for the early decimation of Autumn. However I still have movie theaters aplenty whose confines I may duck within not only to avoid you, but also catch a classic flick while I'm waiting for Spring '14. The war goes on, my old foe...

October 23rd 2013. Pick Of The Day.

I'm just gonna go ahead and skip to the continuing series today, which include Film Forum's Jacques Demy huggery, MoMA's ongoing Auteurist History of Film and annual To Save and Project, and BAM's heartfelt <

October 22nd 2013. Pick Of The Day.

A slim but choice menu for the NYC Cinegeek today, as Jacques Demy's poppy jazz opera, Kubrick's worst vacation commercial ever, and some such other nonsense from Godard battle for your attendance.

October 20th 2013. Pick Of The Day.

The exceptional frivolities on display for the NYC Cinegeek today include Howard Hawks & William Faulkner's unique theory on the building of the pyramids, Robert Altman's acerbic reduction of the country music scene (whatehvz, everything he did was an acerbic reduction of something!), and the restoration of silent filmmaker Karl Brown's tale of love amongst the Rocky Mountains. Sigh.
